Child abuse and neglect occur in all segments of our society, but the risk factors are greater in families in which parents seem to be having economic, housing or personal problems; are isolated from their families or community; have difficulty controlling anger; abuse alcohol or drugs; have little to no education; and were abused or neglected as children (Prevent Child Abuse America, 2003). Prevention is the key to lowering both the maltreatment rate and reducing the need to place children in foster care (Children’s Services Council of PBC).

HUGS for Kids addresses the issues that place parents at risk of abusing or neglecting their children. We provide in-home case management services to help families identify and obtain services that reduce stress and improve home environments. Our staff of professionals provides in-home parenting education through the following programs:

Palm Beach County Programs

Breastfeeding Coalition of Palm Beach County
The Coalition’s mission is to ensure a strong, positive climate of breastfeeding promotion, education, and support through a cooperative network of community agencies, organizations and individuals.

Family Mentoring
The Family Mentoring program is a voluntary program for families with school age children in the Lantana and Lake Worth area that feel overwhelmed and want to ensure that their children do their best in school. A volunteer mentor visits a family twice per month for six months to a year. with the entire family to talk and listen to families, spend time having fun together, and can assist parents with questions regarding their child's education, development and safety.

Healthy Start
This program is part of the Healthy Beginnings System and provides case management and parent education to pregnant women and newborn babies at risk and in need of intervention in order to increase positive pregnancy, birth and developmental outcomes. Families are linked to services in the community and may participate until the child is three years old.

Healthy Families
Healthy Families is a community-based, voluntary home visiting program for expectant and new at-risk parents living in Boynton Beach, Lantana, Riviera Beach and West Palm Beach. This program serves pregnant women and newborn babies at risk and focuses on promoting positive parent/child relationships and encouraging healthy child growth and development. Services are available to families from birth until four years old.

Broward County Programs

Healthy Start
Healthy Start is a collaborative program that provides comprehensive case management and prenatal and parenting support services to the families of pregnant women and newborn babies at risk and in need of intervention in order to increase positive pregnancy, birth and developmental outcomes. HUGS for Kids serve those who reside in North and Central Broward County. This program is funded by the Broward County Healthy Start Coalition.


Women’s Initiative to Start Healthy (W.I.S.H.)
This program provides Case Management and Prenatal and Parenting support services to pregnant women, infants and children, birth to age three, who reside in the 33311 and 33313 zip codes. Services will be provided in a participant’s home and at a store-front community center location. The “Family Support Center” is located in Lauderdale Lakes and will serve the uninsured, Medicaid recipients and other indigent individuals. This program is funded by the Broward County Healthy Start Coalition.
